X Factor 2010 finalists One Direction have unveiled their debut single – ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ – due for release in September.

The band formed during the boot camp stage of last year’s series after initially applying individually, and went on to finish third in the commpetition behind Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson.

Simon Cowell mentored the group and signed them up to his record label Syco earlier this year. The boys then set off to Los Angeles to work on a debut album.

Harry Styles said: “We’re so excited to get the single finally out there. When we were recording in the studio we knew instantly that we wanted this track to be our first single.”

Zayn Malik added: “I think the album is going to surprise a few people. It’s very individual to us. We wanted to make sure that it was our sound.”

The single will be available from September 11, with an album due for release later in the year.

Cher Lloyd, who finished behind One Direction in last year’s series in fourth, is currently number one in the UK with her debut single ‘Swagger Jagger’.
