BBC spends £22m as The Voice prepares to topple The X Factor

The Voice line upThe Voice line up

BBC bosses have spent £22million trying to get their new talent show The Voice to upstage The X Factor – with Will.i.am leading the fight on the judging panel.

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen has signed a two-year deal bagging the rights for the US TV favourite to up the Saturday night viewing stakes.Unlike on The X Factor, judges are unable to see the acts and must rate them solely on their vocal skills.

Will joins singers Jessie J and Tom Jones and The Script star Danny O’Donoghue on the panel, which Corporation chiefs hope will be more than a match for the line-up over on ITV. On The X Factor the victor is immediately signed up to boss Simon Cowell’s Syco label.

The Voice winner will get a record deal with music giant Universal.

Sources close to the show say viewers can expect fireworks between Will and Jessie J when the show starts in March.

A source said: “There is an awful lot of pressure, given the money spent on the format, for the ratings to be good.

“But at the moment all signs are that it will be cash well spent.”

X Factor grabs National TV Awards glory as Scots Doctor Who star Karen Gillan … – Scottish Daily Record

Coronation StreetThe cast of Coronation Street celebrate their National TV Awards win

IT WAS X Factor’s turn to shine as it was named Best Talent Show at last night’s National TV Awards.

But unfortunately for Simon Cowell, he wasn’t there to see it…

He failed to show for the star-studded ceremony at London’s O2 centre, having been told BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing would lift with the honour instead.

But X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos turned up – and she wasn’t disappointed. Although Strictly trounced a lacklustre Factor in the ratings, the talent contest triumphed thanks to the voting public.

A host of stars lit up the prestigious ceremony, including soap babe Jacqueline Jossa, Lorraine Kelly and Tess Daly.

Carol Vorderman, looking stunning in fitted gown that she has worn before, arrived with her Loose Women mates.

Coronation Street star Michael le Vell made his first public appearance since discovering he will not face child sex abuse charges. Le Vell smiled but refused speak on the red carpet.

Co-star Michelle Keegan – Rovers barmaid Tina McIntyre – was more chatty. She said: “It was an EastEnders year last time, it’s about time Coronation Street got the recognition it deserves.”

Michelle will be smiling today – Corrie won Best Drama Serial. The cast dedicated the award to Street star Betty Driver, who died last year.

Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster, said: “This one’s for Betty.”

They’ll also be needing a bigger trophy room in Downton tr Abbey. The series, set in the 1920s, has won at the Emmys and the Golden Globes – and at the NTAs it won Best Drama.

Brendan Coyle, who plays valet Bates, paid tribute to Julian Fellowes for the “storytelling and scripts” which had made the show into such a success.

Hugh Bonneville – who plays the Earl of Grantham – joked that talk of a film was premature, saying: “Let’s do series three first.”

Downton storming to victory was another triumph for ITV – it beat BBC rivals Doctor Who, fantasy series Merlin and last year’s winner Waterloo Road.

But there was some good news for the Doctor Who duo. Matt Smith took the Best Actor gong while Karen Gillan, who plays sidekick Amy Pond, won Best Actress.

Clutching her award, Inverness-born Karen said: “I am still shaking, I can’t believe this. I’m going to phone my mum as soon as possible.”

On her upcoming departure from Doctor Who, she added: “There is a huge part of me that wishes I wasn’t going.”

As the night went on, ITV’s joy just kept on coming. Geordie duo Ant and Dec – who kicked off the event by performing a song with Sir Bruce Forsyth – were named Best Entertainment Presenters for an incredible 11th year running.

Ant joked: “We haven’t got any more room on the mantelpiece.

“One day the run will come to an end but we’re glad it’s not now.”

Dec added: “We were nervous about singing with Sir Bruce. It’s been a while since we dusted off our vocal cords.”

There was further joy for the pair, who also host I’m a Celebrity. It won Best Reality Programme, seeing off The Apprentice and The Only Way is Essex.

This Morning won the Best Factual Programme gong ahead of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.

EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa won Best Newcomer for her portrayal of troubled teen Lauren Branning, while Corrie star Katherine Kelly won the Serial Drama Performance gong.

Comedian Michael McIntyre lost out to Ant and Dec in the presenter category but his Comedy Roadshow was named Best Entertainment Programme.

Chat show rivals Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross were left speechless by Alan Carr, whose Chatty Man was voted the public’s favourite talk show.

A thrilled Carr said: “It’s lovely people have taken the time to vote. I haven’t won anything for ages. I thought Loose Women would win again.”

Asked why his show was so successful, he replied: “I think you get more getting them drunk than doing research. They loosen up after a Lambrini.”

Wossy got a special Lifetime Recognition award for his many years of entertaining us. Picking up his gong from Brucie, a beaming Jonathan said: “It is kinda odd to win – and Sir Bruce presented it.”

He added jokingly: “He was my inspiration and I wanted to be like him when I was a kid. Now I know him, I do not want to be like him.”

Cult ITV2 show Celebrity Juice won Best Comedy Panel Show ahead of mainstream rivals Have I Got News for You, QI and Mock the Week.

And David Walliams, who bagged a Landmark Award for his Sport Relief charity swim, got the biggest laugh backstage when he revealed that his friends and family are all desperate to know what Simon Cowell is really like.

David, who has joined the Britain’s Got Talent panel, said: “I love being with Simon, he really makes me laugh.

“Just like when you are swimming the Thames, working with Simon you need to cover yourself with lard.

“Lots of my friends, even in the industry ask, ‘What’s he like? Is he gay?’” Meanwhile, Gary Barlow insisted he wanted to be on the X Factor judging panel in 2012. Tulisa Contostavlos also said she would love to return.

The big winners:
